Are you the type of person who always plays the good guy? In Mass Effect, did you always choose the Paragon options? Do angels sing as you open the door for old ladies at the store? Do you want to rain righteous judgment down upon your foes? If so, the Wings of Light deck is the deck for you.

General Strategy – The Sky’s the Limit
This deck has a lot of ways to win, depending on your early draws. There are some nice cheap creatures in this deck, so you might be able to pound your opponent to an early defeat by getting them out first. There are also a lot of defensive options, such as the Angelic Wall and Youthful Knight (which is also a good early offensive option) that can keep your opponent at bay early on until you rack up a ton o’ life or get out your strong creatures.
Of main importance is getting out your Glorious Anthem cards. Getting a +1/+1 boost for every creature you control is a huge bonus, and will almost always tip the scales to your favor.
If you’re getting pummeled early on, work on getting life-adding cards out to keep your head above water until you get out good boost cards or stronger creatures.
Killer combos and card-specific notes
Youthful Knight
At a cost of two mana, these guys are ridiculously cheap for their power. Get a couple out early on, and you’ll at least keep your opponent at bay, if not get a lot of good licks in. Wrap them in Serra’s Embrace or get a Glorious Anthem or two out, and their First Strike ability makes them beastly.
Skyhunter Skirmisher
Only 1/1, but with Double Strike, this creature can be a force – especially when boosted with Glorious Anthem or other cards.
Goldenglow Moth
A creature with 0/1 is teh suck, right? Well, this is another creature that benefits heavily from boosting spells. Get Serra’s Embrace and a Glorious anthem, and suddenly the moth is an extra health factory. It’s also a good sacrificial lamb.
This creature also combos well with Luminesce and Holy Day. If you plan to play these, be sure to block with the moth to get your +4 health while still keeping the moth alive.
Paladin En-Vec
This dude is really a pain for the Flame, Shadow, and Scales decks. He’s pretty much an impenetrable wall between you and the creatures in those decks.
Voice of All
Arguably the best 2/2 creature available in Duels, she thwarts pretty much any single-color deck, and multicolor decks don’t have a much better shot at getting rid of her. With protection, there’s typically almost no way to get rid of her with a single color deck.
Pacifism
Definitely a great card, but remember that it only stops attacking or blocking – it doesn’t stop creatures from using their abilities. So don’t use it on, say, Kamahl, Pit Fighter, with the expectation that you’ll stop him from direct damaging the hell out of you.
Deck matchups
Teeth of the Predator (Green)
Your main advantage here is your flight ability. Chances are that your opponent will get his bigger creatures out faster than you can, but if you have enough fliers, you’ll have a pretty good shot at the W. Also, Pacifism can really hose your opponent if you get it on the right creature, so hold onto it for the right moment, if you can.
Hands of Flame (Red)
Wings probably has a decent advantage here. Though Flame’s direct-damage can offset the flight advantage somewhat, cards like Luminesce and Paladin En-Vec are direct counters for this deck. Flame has at least one spell specific for you, though, in Cryoclasm. But, unless it comes early on, or in a game where you’re having a tough time getting mana, that’s not too hurtful.
Wings of Light (White)
Chances are that you’re in for a long matchup, here. Each player will probably be racking up health (especially if they both get Angel’s Feather out). So, like almost any same-deck matchup, your chances probably depend on outdrawing your opponent.
Eyes of Shadow (Black)
A lot of players will pick Wings specifically to counter Shadow, but it seems to me to be a flip-a-coin matchup. Each deck has specific cards to target the other. But, with no way to counter each other’s non-creature spells, getting the best enchantments and artifacts out (such as The Rack or Glorious Anthem) may spell victory. Also, whichever deck gets out fliers first plays a big role. You’ll have to weigh the pros/cons of holding onto Pacifism for the right creature vs. the chance of losing it due to a discard spell.
Thoughts of the Wind (Blue)
Wind negates Wings’ aerial advantage, and Wind’s Wall of Spears pretty much thwarts the advantage of getting out a Youthful Knight. But, I think Wings still wins this matchup most of the time due to its ability to rack up health over a drawn-out game, which is often what Wind also needs to have a better shot at victory. Wind’s ability to counter your good creatures and non-creature spells makes it a dangerous one, though.
Claws of Vengeance (Red, White, Green)
Claws doesn’t have much in its favor vs. Wings, except that Claws also has Angel’s feather. So, there’s always the chance that you’ll be helping out your opponent with every spell you play. If you get to recruit Voice of All, pick Red here. Most of the white-only creatures are pretty weak, as are the green-only ones. Her only real threat is Pacifism. Most of the creatures you have to worry about have red, so you’ll be safe. Paladin En-Vec is also pretty good for this reason.
Ears of the Elves (Black & Green)
Wings’ inability to counter non-creature spells or direct-damage creatures really can hurt it vs. this deck. If the right elves are recruited, you’re in for a headache. You do have the advantage of flight, though, the Jagged-Scar Archers can put a hurtin’ on your fliers. Mass Calcify and Wrath of God can be really important here to wipe out a large elf battalion.
Scales of Fury (Black, Red, Green)
With cards that target both Red and Black, you’ve got some good counters to this deck. Again, if you get Voice of All, pick Red. Pacifism can really thwart some of the strong creatures, but Scales does have a lot going for it to hurt Wings. If Scales starts getting a lot of mana, you’ll have to worry about Violent Ultimatum, which can turn a Glorious Anthem-boosted army back to their former selves really quickly. Also, direct-damage and insta-kill spells can really hose up your tough creatures. Go for a quick W before Scales can get too big for its britches. |
