I need a little advice.

My son really wants Black Ops. The deal is, he has a kids Live account and all his buddies play it (cringe, I know).

My question is this: I know it's an M rated game, but how suitable is it for a 12 year old?

I let Ty play Halo Reach, but that's because I was able to give it an ocular pat down and clear it for passage.

So - how is it?

Is it similar to previous COD titles in terms of violence and language? Is there any boning in it (I'm not sure how they'd weave that into the story, but I got to ask)? Is it totally F Bomb-tastic?

Let me know!

Shifty (with his concerned parent hat on).

Content wise, it's far more gory and filled with more hard language than any of the previous titles in the series.

So as a guy that sells M rated video games all the time to kids, and watch their parents give me the frustrated "It's okay that it's M" look, I say no.

12 is right on the line where a kid can start handling more mature content, at least that's how it was for me. Honestly though I would say no since the game is incredibly violent, more so than Modern Warfare 2 IMO.

There was an option to turn off graphic content when I first started playing Single Player. The single player is way too violent I think for a 12yo without the filter on. I'm not really sure it would be suitable with the filter on either.

Liberal use of "fuck" and "shit", realistic and graphic portrayals of violence, a number of fucked up torture scenes, and a guy getting his throat slit so deep his head almost falls off. So I wouldn't really consider it anywhere near suitable for your average 12 year old.

I feel like an ass for saying it though, because I think I would have been allowed to play it if it came out when I was 12, more out of trust than negligence though.

Agreed. No way near appropriate Shifty. I have to have this conversation with my Godparents's son who is 12 (turning 13 soon). IMO, even XBL itself is inappropriate at age 13. My son/daughter will be waiting until they are 14 or 15 to play online games. There is just too much crap out there now. I mean we all had to form our own community to get away from 11 and 12 year old brats that like to get online and curse at everyone just because they think that makes them grown up, or cool, or tough, or whatever... it's just rediculous.

This game should certainly not be played by a 12 year old IMO Shifty. I know it's your call, but I have told my Godparents that their son should not even have XBL until another year or two, let alone a COD game of any kind. The violence is just too life-like. It's not like shooting aliens in Halo, this is more realistic (and graphic) than most games I've played other than Gears of War. I know, I'm a Grinch, but it is in his best interest, even though he does not think so. Just my 2 Cents.

Keep Calm... and demand trial by combat!

Thanks again for all the feedback. Looks he isn't going to see any game time with this game.

To be honest, I REALLY struggled with the whole XBL thing. His best buddy moved to Kansas City, so I felt really bad for my son and let him get an XBL account so he could play Halo Reach online with him. We monitor his LIVE activity like crazy - he can only play when we're there, he can't chat to anyone else but the people on his friends list (the FL is approved by me).

I was cool with Reach since I had played it and made the call that it would be okay for him. I didn't think Black Ops would be suitable for him, so I thought I'd confirm with the experts - you guys!

Looks like his buddy will have to start playing more suitable games...

Thanks again.

Sounds like you got this thing down. I would have to agree with your practices. My daughter may be only 3, but I still have to wonder about this kinda stuff in the future.

This is tough call Shifty. This version of CoD is way more hardcore than any of the other titles. A lot of has to to do with the era it takes place in and a lot of it has to do with playing as Spec Ops member. There are a lot of up close and personal kills that are pretty damn violent. As far as MP goes I'd say only if he plays in private matches with friends only or in the Combat Training with friends only.

Right on, mate. As the years go by I think this is going to get tougher and tougher, especially since being "online" is such an everyday thing these days. Your daughter will be asking for an XBL account by the time she's five judging by the crazy progression we're seeing with kids! Seriously thought, "online" is such an uncontrollable thing. We can do our best to lock it down, but boy do I get worried.

Yeah, I was wondering about the theme too. I know his buddies and they'll be playing in public matches - the kid will have to be disappointed, but I'm sure he'll get over it quickly!

Playing games like this is how kids end up carrying katanas in their cars a few years later. Scary stuff, indeed! :o

I never really censored much of what Jonathan played and he hasn't killed anyone yet. At least not that we're aware of  :o  But I don't know about playing online at that age. Some of the shit you hear in public matches can be pretty ridiculous and 12 is a monkey-see-monkey-do age, so if he hears someone singing in the lobby or doing other obnoxious things, and thinks 'hey, that's pretty funny', he may end up following suit. Even with proper guidance, unless you're right there by his side at all times, kids will be kids in most cases. It's human nature.

That's what would happen if he ended up playing with SGers. Playing with randoms only leads to singing and putting swastikas (sp?) on your playercard

I didn't remember this until now, but there are parental controls available on the 360. You can block all voice chat from everyone but people on his friends list, and I even think there's an option to have to approve all incoming friend requests yourself.

I let my son play multiplayer Black Ops, but definately no SP! We just got the family Live account and it works well for him, not so well for me. The settings to lock him down also apply to me. I need to change up my account so mine isn't on the Family Live account but theirs is.

Like you though, I monitor the heck out of his use of Live and who he's playing with. He can't hear anyone except his friends and I know all of them and their parents.

I've got two 12 year olds. Neither was allowed to watch me play the SP campaign. We are willing to let them watch me play MP online, especially since they cant hear any of the comments coming thru the headset. I dont think they'd be allowed to play MP with the gen pop...potentially with approved friends in private matches though :dunno:
